Kanchanaburi is Thailand's third largest province. It covers an area of 19,486 square kilometres, most of which is forested mountains. There are fertile plains around the meeting point of the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai Rivers where the town is located. To the west, Kanchanaburi shares a border with Myanmar and has the Tanaowasi Range as its borderline.
Beyond the compact provincial capital, some 130 kilometres from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi unfolds in progressively arresting scenic beauty in a landscape characterised by several waterfalls, caves once inhabited by Neolithic man, national parks and tranquil riverside and reservoir settings. Many of its major attractions are also connected with the Second World War, and more specifically the years 1942 to 1945.

Bridge over the River Kwai,is the main attraction for many visitors. Immortalized in the famous movie and novel, it was a part of the infamous Death Railway to Burma, constructed by POWs working for the Japanese in hellish conditions during World War 2. Some 16,000 POWs and 100,000 Asian workers died during the railway construction. The present iron bridge is the second wartime incarnation (a part of the original can be found in the War Museum), but 2 central 'boxy' spans were rebuilt after the war to replace three sections destroyed by Allied bombing.

Erawan Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand and a must see if you are in Kanchanaburi. This waterfall is 65 km. from Amphoe Mueang, situated on the Khwae Yai riverside. The water source is from Huai Mong Lai flowing down from the top of the mountains and a 2,100-metre-high cliff. Namtok Erawan is 1,500 metres long, and it can be divided into 7 levels each of which has a swimming pond. Also, the Erawan nature study route is provided with a distance of 1,060 metres. It takes about 30 minutes to walk through montane forest, sight-seeing points and wonderful deciduous forest. It is a good experience to feel the refreshing nature and gain knowledge from the description signs provided.
